Installation and burial of two export cables of about 71 km each between Race Bank and the mainland, plus a 6 km interconnector between the two offshore substations, for a total of roughly 148 km of 220 kV export cable system.
Jan De Nul Group carried out the offshore export cable installation for the Race Bank project, installing two approximately 71 km export cables between the wind farm and the mainland and an additional interconnector cable of about 6 km between the two offshore high-voltage substations. The company used its cable-laying vessel Isaac Newton for deep-water installation and developed bespoke low-ground-pressure trenching machines, Sunfish and Moonfish, to bury the cables across the sensitive intertidal area in The Wash nature reserve. In total, about 148 km of export and interlink cables now forming part of the Race Bank OFTO transmission assets were installed and buried to meet stringent environmental and technical requirements.
