Following the July 2025 cancellation of the initial auction, the new Belgian federal government committed in its coalition agreement to proceed with the Princess Elisabeth Zone projects and scheduled a relaunch of the offshore tender for the first lot no later than the end of the first quarter of 2026.
On 2 July 2025, the Federal Minister of Energy, Mathieu Bihet, cancelled the ongoing offshore wind tender for the first 700 MW lot in the Princess Elisabeth Zone, citing legal uncertainties in the regulatory framework, the very short four-year construction window, the cancellation of the Princess Elisabeth Island’s second phase, and permitting uncertainties for the Ventilus onshore grid connection.
In November 2024, the Belgian federal government launched the first competitive auction for a 700 MW lot in the Princess Elisabeth Zone (Lot 1), initiating the tender procedure that will award the offshore wind concession and associated rights under a two-sided CfD regime and citizen-participation requirements.
