On 17 July 2025, Red Eléctrica advanced the Peninsula–Balearic Islands 2 interconnection by submitting a modified project incorporating the newly agreed onshore route for the second link between the Spanish mainland and the Balearic Islands. This step followed the conclusion of a dedicated working group including the Government of the Balearic Islands, Spain’s Ministry for Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge, the Consell de Mallorca, Alcúdia Council, and the local residents’ platform VAAC. After months of analysis of multiple alternatives, the group reached unanimous consensus on a technically, environmentally, and socially acceptable onshore corridor. Reflecting this consensus, Red Eléctrica updated the project documentation to embed the agreed route and submitted it as a decisive milestone towards delivering the new interconnection, which is described as vital for the security and quality of electricity supply and for achieving the Balearic Islands’ energy transition objectives.
