IPTO commissioned and inaugurated the new 150 kV gas-insulated onshore substation (GIS) on Naxos on 13 October 2020, formally connecting the island to the Hellenic High Voltage Transmission System via Paros and Mykonos and completing Phase B of the Cyclades Interconnection. The substation and associated loop between Paros, Naxos and Mykonos provide double supply to these islands, enhancing security of electricity supply for Naxos and the Small Cyclades.
In 2020 the 150 kV submarine cable interconnection between Paros and Naxos, including underground sections at each end and forming part of the Cyclades Interconnection Phase B, was fully installed and the project was completed, enabling the integration of Naxos into the Greek high-voltage transmission system. The link consists of a three-core 150 kV AC submarine cable with a nominal capacity of 140 MVA and associated works at the Paros and Naxos substations.
IPTO’s 2020 Annual Financial Report states that Phase B of the Cyclades Interconnection was completed in September 2020 and explicitly lists the Paros–Naxos 150 kV, 7.6 km, 140 MVA submarine cable as one of the sub‑projects included in this completed phase. This indicates that the Paros–Naxos interconnector entered full commercial operation as part of Phase B by September 2020.
Onshore construction for the Naxos 150 kV gas-insulated substation, part of the Cyclades Interconnection 2nd Phase closing the loop between Paros, Naxos and Mykonos, began in 2018 under an EPC contract executed by the ELECTROMEC SA – NARI Group Corporation consortium for IPTO to connect Naxos island to the Hellenic Electricity Transmission System.
Authority: European Commission · Licence: EU state aid approval (SA.35695) for public funding of the Cyclades islands interconnection with the National Mainland Interconnected Transmission System, including the Paros–Naxos 150 kV link
On 21 November 2014, the European Commission approved state aid measure SA.35695 for the Greek TSO ADMIE to finance the Cyclades interconnection system linking the autonomous power systems of Syros, Paros, Naxos and Mykonos to the mainland grid, a project with total investment costs of about EUR 400 million whose Phase B includes the 150 kV, 140 MVA submarine cable connection between Paros and Naxos and from Naxos to Mykonos.
In 2013, the Hellenic Independent Power Transmission Operator (HIPTO) completed a socio-economic and financial analysis of the Cyclades interconnection project, which encompasses the Paros–Naxos 150 kV submarine link, estimating a total project cost of €400.17 million with Phase A accounting for €250.13 million and annual operating costs of €1.3 million. The study calculated a net present value of €341–371 million and an internal rate of return of 17.87% over 2017–2038, concluding that the interconnection scheme is a profitable solution for a future integrated, secure and sustainable power system in the area.
On 11 February 2011, a Greek ministerial decision (FA/E 3.2/57/3) formally listed the "Interconnection of Cyclades islands with the National Mainland Interconnected Transmission System"—which includes Phase B works such as the 150 kV submarine cable link between Paros and Naxos and associated substation infrastructure—as a key electricity project to be financed from state resources. The decision specifies that the project is funded by EU structural funds with co-financing from the national budget via the National Strategic Reference Framework (NSRF), thereby granting capital support to ADMIE for the Cyclades interconnection, including the Paros–Naxos 150 kV HVAC cable segment.
