On 19 March 2018, IPTO inaugurated Phase A of the Cyclades Interconnection, which linked Syros and Paros to the mainland transmission system and allowed downstream islands, including Ios, to be electrically supplied via Paros from the Mainland Power Transmission System. This operational change meant that Ios and several neighbouring islands could be fed through their existing radial connections from Paros rather than relying primarily on local autonomous production, contributing to improved supply reliability and reduced use of local oil-fired generation in the Cyclades.
In early 2018, after Phase A of the Cyclades Interconnection became fully operational, Syros and Paros were linked to the mainland high‑voltage system, and through Paros the existing submarine connection began supplying electricity from the Mainland Power Transmission System to Ios and neighbouring islands. This marks the first transmission of mainland grid power over the Paros–Ios cable as part of the interconnected Cyclades system.
According to DEDDIE’s 2026–2030 Distribution Network Development Plan annex (Table PA-12 on MV submarine interconnections), the Paros–Ios submarine link is listed as an island-to-island connection with two 15 kV 3×95 Cu cables of 27.8 km each (total 55.6 km), with the year 2000 given for this interconnection, indicating that cable installation was completed by 2000.
