In 1985 a 380 kV submarine power cable with a transmission capacity of about 1000 MVA was laid through the Strait of Messina between mainland Italy and Sicily, replacing the overhead line carried by the Pylons of Messina and enabling the first power transmission on the new subsea interconnector.
In 1985, four 380 kV submarine cables across the Strait of Messina entered service, permanently connecting the mainland Italian transmission network with that of Sicily with a transfer capacity of about 1,000 MVA, replacing the previous overhead crossing as the main interconnection.
