Replacement of the Öresund 400 kV AC interconnector between Denmark and Sweden with four parallel XLPE cables over an approximate 42 km route (c. 30 km subsea, 12 km onshore).
NKT, in consortium with Boskalis, was awarded a turnkey contract by Svenska kraftnät to replace the ageing 400 kV AC Öresund interconnector system between Denmark and Sweden. NKT’s scope covered the engineering and design of the new XLPE HVAC cable system, manufacture of approximately 36 km of 400 kV extruded power cables at its Karlskrona high‑voltage factory, and the onshore installation and terminations at the landfalls and substations on both shores. The project replaced oil‑filled cables first installed in 1973 with four new single‑core cables, improving transmission security between the Swedish and Danish grids. Cable production took place in 2019, with commissioning completed in 2020. For NKT, the order value was reported at about €22 million.
