On 12 December 2025, the European Investment Bank approved €490 million in debt financing for IPTO’s North East Aegean Interconnection project, which will connect the islands of Lemnos, Lesvos, Chios, Samos and Skyros to Greece’s mainland grid and the Dodecanese network via high-voltage AC submarine cables and GIS substations.
On 22 September 2025, the environmental dossier (Environmental Impact Assessment) for the project "Interconnection of the Northeastern Aegean islands with the mainland system – section KYT Nea Santas to Lesvos coupling substation"—covering the assets in Thrace, the submarine transmission lines Thrace–Limnos and Limnos–Lesvos, and associated underground cables and substations on Limnos and Western Lesvos—was formally submitted by IPTO (ADMIE) to the competent environmental authority, initiating the environmental licensing consultation process.
On 26 February 2025, during the final phase of IPTO’s international tender for the submarine cable projects of the Dodecanese and North Aegean island interconnections, participating companies submitted their binding financial and technical offers for the six-year framework agreement, which encompasses submarine cables for the Northern Aegean Interconnection including the Nea Santa–Limnos link.

IPTO subsequently reported that the marine seabed surveys for both the Dodecanese and Northeast Aegean interconnections, which cover the Limnos–Thrace (Nea Santa–Limnos) cable route, were completed in December 2024.
In October 2024, Phase B of the submarine cable framework tender for the Dodecanese and Northeast Aegean interconnections, involving submission of detailed technical and economic offers by the prequalified contractors, was initiated and was in progress, advancing procurement for cable links including the Nea Santa–Limnos section.
By July 2024, Phase A of IPTO’s submarine cable framework tender for the Dodecanese and Northeast Aegean interconnections, covering submission of participation applications, was completed, closing the pre-qualification stage for cable contractors for links including Nea Santa–Limnos.
In April 2024, IPTO launched the procurement process for submarine cable projects for the Dodecanese and Northeast Aegean interconnections by posting the Phase A call for expressions of interest under a framework agreement for the cable interconnections, which includes the Nea Santa–Limnos segment of the Northern Aegean Interconnection.
In November 2023, IPTO assigned contracts for studies and marine seabed surveys for the Northeast Aegean islands electrical interconnections, including the Limnos–Thrace (Nea Santa–Limnos) route, and by late 2024 reported these seabed surveys as in progress along this corridor.
In its Network Development Plan 2023‑2032, IPTO listed the North Aegean Interconnection, which encompasses the Nea Santa–Limnos phase, as a major project with an expected commissioning in 2029 and a total estimated cost of about EUR 863 million.
IPTO announced that the Interconnection of the North Aegean Islands, including the 150 kV AC link from the Nea Santa high‑voltage centre in Thrace to Limnos and onward to Lesvos, was included for the first time in its preliminary Ten‑Year Network Development Plan (TYNDP) 2021‑2030, with Phase A (Corinth–Kos, Kos–Rhodes, Nea Santa–Limnos and Limnos–Lesvos) planned for completion by 2027.
