NorNed is a 580 km-long subsea HVDC interconnector between Feda (Norway) and Eemshaven (Netherlands), configured as a symmetrical monopole with two ±450 kV DC cables.
ABB was awarded the main HVDC turnkey contract for the NorNed interconnector by TenneT and Statnett. Under this construction‑phase contract ABB supplied the two ±450 kV HVDC converter stations at Feda (Norway) and Eemshaven (Netherlands) and manufactured the majority of the subsea mass‑impregnated HVDC cable system. ABB’s scope covered the shallow and mid‑depth sections of the 580 km link, including approximately the first 420 km of the route from the Dutch side, using a combination of flat mass‑impregnated twin‑core cable and paired single‑core subsea cables. The contract, valued at about $270 million, included design, manufacture and delivery of the converter stations and most of the underwater cable needed for the 700 MW, ±450 kV NorNed transmission link.
