On 23 December 2004, ABB (now Hitachi Energy) received the go‑ahead to proceed with the NorNed HVDC interconnector between Norway and the Netherlands, under a $270 million contract from TenneT and Statnett. This decision, following a delay after the original 2000 award, effectively confirmed the final investment for a three‑year, 580 km, 600 MW (700 MW continuous) subsea HVDC project starting in January 2005, including supply of the converter stations and most of the underwater cables.
