The Normandie 1 (N1) 100 MW subsea interconnector, running approximately 27 km from Surville in Normandy to Archirondel in Jersey as a replacement for the EDF1 cable, entered full commercial operation in February 2017. Following installation and initial power imports in late 2016, the cable was confirmed as operational from 2017 onwards, providing low‑carbon electricity from France to Jersey.
On 15 August 2016, Dutch contractor VBMS, using the cable-laying vessel Stemat Spirit, completed laying the 27 km Normandie 1 (N1) subsea power cable from Surville in Normandy to Jersey, offloading the cable in St Catherine’s Bay. The crew marked the cable with buoys, and VBMS cut and positioned it with around 60 metres spare ready for connection to the Archirondel substation switchgear by Prysmian jointers, marking the completion of the main subsea cable installation for the interconnector.
On 9 August 2016, installation of the Normandie 1 (N1) 27 km subsea power cable from Surville, Normandy to Archirondel, Jersey began in earnest, as the cable-laying vessel Stemat Spirit approached the French beach, set up on anchors, and commenced the operation to pull the cable ashore before continuing the offshore laying towards Jersey.
In July 2016, onshore construction for the Normandie 1 (N1) interconnector commenced at the French landfall, where contractor VBMS carried out a 300‑metre horizontal drill under the dunes at Surville and installed the cable through a rocky gulley as part of the landfall civil works and connection to the onshore grid infrastructure.
On 16 July 2015, Jersey Electricity plc awarded a turnkey contract for the Normandie 1 interconnector between France (Surville) and Jersey (Archirondel) to a consortium of Prysmian Group and VBMS, with Prysmian selected as the cable supplier. Prysmian is responsible for the design, manufacture, supply and commissioning of approximately 28 km of 90 kV 3-core HVAC submarine and land cables and related components under a contract worth about €28 million, while VBMS will undertake marine cable laying, protection and landfall works.
Licence: Planning permissions for Normandie 1 subsea cable
Planning permissions for the new subsea interconnector cable Normandie 1 (N1), an additional link to France replacing the EDF1 cable, were granted in May 2015 as part of ongoing investment in the Channel Islands subsea cable network.
