On 19 October 2022 Vattenfall signed a contract with LS Cable & System (cable manufacturer) and DEME Group (installer) for the Norfolk Boreas HVDC export cable package. LS Cable & System's scope is the design, engineering and manufacture of approximately 360 km of 320 kV HVDC export cables and accompanying fibre-optic cables, supplied from its Donghae plant in South Korea. The award was significant for LS Cable & System as one of the company's first large UK offshore HVDC export cable contracts and supported its strategy of scaling HVDC cable manufacturing capacity for European offshore wind. After Vattenfall's July 2023 decision to halt Boreas and the March 2024 transfer of the Norfolk Offshore Wind Zone to RWE, the LS Cable & System contract for Boreas has not been publicly terminated but is dormant pending a fresh revenue route and FID. RWE has not announced a successor cable manufacturing contract for Boreas. The cable installer role for the same contract sits with DEME Group (recorded separately).
