On 10 October 2022 Aker Solutions, in consortium with Siemens Energy, signed an EPCI contract with Vattenfall for the high-voltage direct current (HVDC) grid-connection package on Norfolk Boreas, covering the offshore HVDC converter platform (substructure plus topsides) and the onshore converter station, together with the AC interconnection to the National Grid 400 kV substation at Necton. Aker Solutions's scope is the structural EPCI — jacket foundation, platform substructure, topsides fabrication and offshore installation engineering — while Siemens Energy supplies the HVDC electrical equipment. The contract, the largest grid-connection award in Aker Solutions's history at the time, was based on a multi-project framework that also covered the sister Norfolk Vanguard projects. Following Vattenfall's July 2023 pause of Boreas and the March 2024 sale of the Norfolk Offshore Wind Zone to RWE, the Boreas-specific scope has not been formally terminated but is dormant pending FID. In January 2025 Aker Solutions and Siemens Energy received "full notice to proceed" on the equivalent contracts for Norfolk Vanguard West and East from RWE, confirming the framework has carried into RWE ownership; Norfolk Boreas has not yet received NTP and remains subject to a future investment decision contingent on a new revenue route.
