By April 2017, wpd had completed turbine installation at the 111 MW Nordergründe nearshore wind farm in the German North Sea, confirming that all 18 turbines had been erected. The project is located in the Weser estuary, inside the 12-sea-mile zone, around 15 kilometres north-east of the island of Wangerooge. Up to 200 people were working on site over recent months to implement the offshore project, with multiple specialist vessels operating simultaneously within a compact 3.5 km² construction area. Some turbines were installed on a sand bank where constantly shifting sand masses and varying water depths created challenging access conditions for installation vessels, requiring special excavation to open up navigable approaches. From their project office in Hooksiel, the wpd team can already see the fully erected array of 18 Senvion 6.2M126 turbines on the horizon, marking the completion of the turbine erection phase and a major construction milestone for Nordergründe.
