In October 2016, a major outage occurred on the 20 kV undersea interconnector supplying Tilos from the oil‑fired power station on Kos via Nisyros, when persistent cable faults led to a blackout on Tilos lasting about 7.5 hours; this event is cited as the most severe of the recurring blackouts caused by the unreliable Kos–Nisyros–Tilos submarine cable link.
According to DEDDIE’s network development appendices, the medium-voltage submarine interconnection between Nisyros and Tilos consists of two 20 kV cables (3 x 35 mm² Cu), each 16,000 m long for a total of 32,000 m, listed with a construction year of 1989, indicating that installation of all planned interconnector cables was completed in 1989.
The DEDDIE network development plan lists a medium-voltage (20 kV) submarine interconnection between Nisyros and Tilos, consisting of two 3x35 mm² copper cables with a total length of 32 km, with the year recorded as 1989, indicating that this link has been in operational service since that time as part of the Rhodes distribution area network.
