Windpowernl, citing TenneT, reports that onshore cables for the IJmuiden Ver Alpha and Nederwiek 1 grid connections arrived in Vlissingen with construction consortium NRG scheduled to begin installing the underground land cables from February 2026 along the route from De Piet harbour in Arnemuiden to the converter stations in the Sloe industrial zone. This marks the start of onshore cable installation for Nederwiek 1 around February 2026, later than the original January 2025 projection.
From the beginning of 2025, Next Geosolutions (NextGeo) has been conducting unexploded ordnance (UXO) survey activities in the Nederwiek area under a separate contract awarded by TenneT in January 2025, providing seabed data for TenneT’s offshore grid developments in the region, including the Nederwiek 1 connection discussed in the same sources.
On 15 December 2025, DEME awarded Oceanteam a contract to supply, mobilise and operate a complete cable‑lay tensioner spread and control system on a rental basis to support inshore installation of the IJmuiden Ver Alpha and Nederwiek 1 export power and fibre‑optic cables in the Veerse Meer, forming part of the overall Nederwiek 1 grid connection programme.

On 30 July 2025, Prysmian awarded Next Geosolutions (NextGeo) a contract to perform export cable route surveys for the IJmuiden Ver Alpha and Nederwiek 1 offshore wind sites, covering geophysical and UXO surveys along the planned HVDC export cable routes between 2026 and 2027 to support final route engineering and cable design for the grid connections landing at Sloegebied in Zeeland.
By June 2025, the first steel cut for the Nederwiek 1 offshore converter platform topside had taken place at a fabrication yard in Johor Bahru, Malaysia, marking the start of topside manufacturing for the 2 GW Grid Connection System Nederwiek I‑A.
By 10 June 2025, TenneT reported that preparation of the construction site for the Grid Connection System Nederwiek I-A land station at Sloegebied/Borssele had started, marking the beginning of onshore civil works for the 2 GW HVDC grid connection that will link the Nederwiek wind area to the Dutch 380 kV network.
For the Net op zee Nederwiek 1 offshore grid connection between the Nederwiek wind energy area in the North Sea and the Sloegebied in Borsele, the Minister van Klimaat en Groene Groei (KGG) published the project’s goedkeuringsbesluiten (approval decisions) on 23 May 2025. These decisions were available for inspection until 4 July 2025, and as no appeals were lodged they have become irrevocable, providing final planning and development consent for the project.
For Net op zee Nederwiek 1 Phase 3, the draft decisions (ontwerpbesluiten) were placed on public display from 21 February to 3 April 2025, during which stakeholders could submit views (zienswijzen). This formal consultation round concerns the draft approvals for the Nederwiek 1 offshore grid connection and will inform the final decisions to be published later.
DEME announced on 18 April 2024 that it had been awarded two contracts by Prysmian for the engineering and installation works for the IJmuiden Ver Alpha and Nederwiek 1 offshore grid systems. The scope includes route preparation, surveys, landfalls, beach works, cofferdams, pre-sweeping and rock placement for the Nederwiek 1 525 kV HVDC export cable system, meaning the offshore preparation and supporting works contract for Nederwiek 1 has been procured.
For Phase 2 of the Net op zee Nederwiek 1 grid connection project, the draft Water Permit (Watervergunning) was available for public inspection from 15 December 2023 to 25 January 2024. An appeal was subsequently lodged with the Administrative Jurisdiction Division of the Council of State against the definitive decisions, but this appeal was later withdrawn, making the water-related decisions irrevocable and bringing the permit into legal force.
From 15 December 2023 to 25 January 2024, the draft Water Permit (ontwerp-Watervergunning) for the Net op zee Nederwiek 1 grid connection project was made available for public inspection, during which stakeholders could submit views and formal responses as part of the permit consultation process under Phase 2 of the project.
As part of Phase 1 for Net op zee Nederwiek 1, Bureau Energieprojecten (RVO) opened a formal public consultation on the draft project decisions (ontwerpbesluiten). From Friday 24 November 2023 to Thursday 4 January 2024 these draft decisions were on public display, during which stakeholders could review the proposals and submit their views.
By June 2025, TenneT had selected the Petrofac–Hitachi consortium as contractor for the offshore and onshore converter stations for the Grid Connection System Nederwiek I‑A, the 2 GW HVDC grid connection linking the Nederwiek wind area to the Borssele 380 kV substation at Sloegebied.
On 3 March 2023, TenneT awarded Prysmian Group the contract to design, engineer, manufacture, install, test and commission the 525 kV HVDC submarine and land export cable system for the 2 GW Nederwiek 1 offshore grid connection, as part of a €1.8 billion aggregate award covering both IJmuiden Ver Alpha and Nederwiek 1 and linking future Dutch North Sea wind farms to the onshore grid in Zeeland.
The ministers for Climate and Energy and for Housing and Spatial Planning issued a preparatory decision (voorbereidingsbesluit) for Net op zee Nederwiek 1, defining the area for which the inpassingsplan is being prepared. This decision entered into force on 13 January 2023 and temporarily prevents new developments in the designated corridor that could hinder or block construction of the project, requiring municipalities to take the decision into account when assessing permit applications in the area.
