In November 2012, the Neart na Gaoithe (NnG) offshore wind project reached a key regulatory milestone for its onshore infrastructure when it submitted an application for planning permission for the grid connection works to East Lothian Council. This application covered the full onshore grid connection infrastructure required to transmit power from the offshore export cable landfall to the onshore substation. Specifically, the scope included approximately 12.3 kilometres of buried onshore cable and the development of a new onshore substation, forming a critical interface between the offshore wind farm and the wider electricity network. The submission to the local planning authority marked the transition from design and environmental assessment into the formal consent process for the onshore elements, running in parallel with the separate marine consents for the offshore works. By defining the route for the buried cable and the location and function of the new substation, the application provided East Lothian Council with the necessary technical and environmental information to assess land-use, visual, construction, and community impacts. This regulatory step was essential to securing the permissions needed to build the onshore grid connection, enabling subsequent progression toward construction once planning permission was granted in June 2013. The 2012 submission thus laid the foundation for integrating NnG’s offshore generation into Scotland’s onshore transmission system.
