In June 2013, East Lothian Council granted planning permission for the onshore works to connect the Neart na Gaoithe offshore wind farm to the national grid, authorising construction of approximately 12.3 km of buried onshore export cables between Thorntonloch Beach and a new substation adjacent to the existing Crystal Rig substation, works that constitute the onshore section of the Neart na Gaoithe OFTO transmission system.
