On 29 April 2013 Moyle Interconnector Limited formally decided that the long-term solution to the recurring faults on the Moyle Interconnector’s integrated return conductor was to lay new low-voltage submarine cables along a similar route to augment the existing cables and replace the existing return conductor. In a letter to the Northern Ireland Utility Regulator, Moyle explained that conventional cut-and-splice repairs had proven technically and economically unsustainable and that new cables would remove reliance on the defective polyethylene outer insulation while improving resilience along the full length of the submarine sections, effectively defining the scope of the Moyle Returns cable replacement project.
