Moyle Interconnector Limited appointed Siemens Gas and Power GmbH & Co. KG and Siemens Transmission and Distribution Ltd (together Siemens GPTD) to refurbish and upgrade the HVDC control and protection systems at both Moyle converter stations. The approximately £23 million project covers detailed design, manufacturing, factory testing, installation and commissioning of new control and protection equipment, including replacement of auxiliary supplies, valve base electronics, measurement systems and telecommunications, plus provision of a control training simulator and spares. Delivered pole by pole between 2020 and 2022, the upgrade modernised the original Siemens control technology commissioned in 2001, improved cyber security and functionality, and introduced enhanced overload and ancillary service capabilities to support evolving network conditions in Scotland and Northern Ireland.
