Subsea repair of one of the 250 kV HVDC Moyle Interconnector power cables in the North Channel, including cutting out a faulty section, jointing in a new length, relaying and re-burying the cable to restore full 500 MW capacity.
Nexans carried out subsea repair works on one of the Moyle Interconnector’s HVDC power cables in 2017 after a fault reduced the link’s capacity to 250 MW. The campaign involved locating the fault, de-trenching and cutting the damaged section, then later recovering the cable ends, splicing in a new replacement length, relaying the repaired cable on the seabed and re-burying it. The work was performed in the North Channel between Scotland and Northern Ireland using specialist repair and cable-laying vessels, including the Nexans Skagerrak, and restored the interconnector’s full 500 MW transfer capability. This engagement formed part of the ongoing operations and maintenance regime for the Moyle subsea cable system.
