Magnitude Surveys completed an extensive onshore geophysical survey for the Mona Offshore Wind Project’s onshore cable corridor in North Wales. Commissioned by Mona Offshore Wind Ltd, the work covered approximately 841 hectares of land between the coast of Abergele and Llanelwy, with around 820 hectares successfully surveyed using a fluxgate gradiometer technique. About 21 hectares could not be surveyed due to factors such as overgrown vegetation, unsuitable topography, the presence of livestock, and inaccessible areas. The preliminary geophysical survey report (Magnitude Surveys Ref: MSSH1444) was issued on 12 December 2023 and is included within the Mona Environmental Statement as Volume 7, Annex 5.3 (Onshore Geophysical Survey Report – Part 1). The completed survey identified numerous archaeological anomalies along the proposed onshore cable corridor, defining 13 Areas of Archaeological Activity with possible settlement or occupation evidence, trackways, and enclosure systems, as well as anomalies related to former quarries, limekilns, a lead mine, and historic and modern agricultural practices. These results provide important baseline data for assessing archaeological and heritage constraints associated with the onshore cable route. The survey’s completion and reporting in December 2023 marked a key early-development milestone for refining the Mona cable corridor design and informing the project’s Environmental Statement and subsequent planning and mitigation strategies.
