Middelgrunden

Middelgrunden is an early, community-led offshore wind farm sited on the shoal Middelgrunden in the Øresund, about 3.5 km east of Copenhagen harbour. Built around 2000–2001, the installation comprises twenty 2 MW turbines and was notable both for its scale at the time and for the cooperative ownership model that funded half the project. The cooperative (Middelgrundens Vindmøllelaug) raised capital from thousands of local investors and partnered with the municipal utility to deliver what became a highly visible urban landmark and a demonstration of community participation in offshore wind. Technically, concrete gravity foundations were selected as a cost-efficient, robust solution for the shallow reef site; shallow seabed conditions and ice risk were important design considerations during consenting and construction. Construction used local yard facilities for casting and pre‑assembly, with float‑out and jack‑up positioning during installation. The project has remained operational for over two decades and has been the focus of refurbishment and life‑extension work rather than wholesale replacement; in 2025 authorities granted permission to extend production for a further period subject to conditions and continued renovation. Middelgrunden is significant in market terms as an early, large-scale instance of municipal/community co‑ownership and as a practical predecessor that helped shape later Danish offshore procurement and public engagement approaches.
