On 5 January 2024, Aker Solutions signed a front-end engineering and design (FEED) contract with the Marine Energy Test Centre (METCentre) to pilot its Subsea Collector subsea power system, which will provide shared 66 kV wet-mate connection and subsea switchgear infrastructure and a static export cable to shore for the planned expansion of the Karmøy offshore test area from two to seven floating wind turbines from 2026, with installation to be carried out by the Windstaller Alliance (Aker Solutions, DeepOcean and Solstad Offshore).
The Norwegian Water Resources & Energy Directorate (NVE) granted an expanded concession and new test concessions for the METCentre offshore Karmøy, licensing four new test slots and enabling the installation of five additional floating offshore wind turbines so that up to seven turbines can be tested in total at the site, alongside two bottom-fixed units. This approval, reported in 2022 and described as final approval in December 2023, underpins the METCentre Expansion project and supports development of new floating wind technologies, with associated grid and subsea infrastructure scheduled to be ready for use from 2026.

On 8 December 2023, the Marine Energy Test Centre (METCentre) in Norway received final approval for new floating offshore wind test concessions, giving the green light for five additional wind turbines at its Karmøy offshore test site. This expansion will increase the METCentre concession to seven floating turbine berths in total from 2026, allowing a wider range of floating wind technologies to be demonstrated and providing learning for future commercial projects such as Utsira Nord.
On 8 December 2023, METCentre in Norway was granted final approval for new floating offshore wind test concessions, giving the centre the green light to host five additional floating wind turbines from 2026 so that a total of seven turbines can be tested under the expanded concession in North Sea conditions.
On 20 September 2022, the Norwegian Water Resources & Energy Directorate (NVE) approved an expansion of the Marine Energy Test Centre (METCentre) at Karmøy, licensing four new offshore wind turbine test slots and extending the centre’s concession to allow testing of a total of six floating units (plus the separately consented Zefyros unit), thereby providing the regulatory basis for installing additional floating turbines by 2026.
