Turnkey extra-high-voltage power cable system across the Strait of Messina between Villafranca Tirrena (Sicily) and Scilla (Calabria), comprising two 380 kV cable circuits along an approximately 44 km route (about 38 km submarine, 5.4 km on land) and more than 260 km of single-core cable in total.
Prysmian was awarded a turnkey contract by Terna Spa Rete Elettrica Nazionale to deliver the new 380 kV power cable interconnection across the Strait of Messina between Villafranca Tirrena in Sicily and Scilla in Calabria. The scope covered engineering and system design, manufacture of extra‑high‑voltage single‑core land and submarine cables, and the full installation and commissioning of two AC cable circuits along an approximately 44 km route, including about 38 km of submarine cable. Prysmian carried out offshore laying with its cable‑laying vessel Giulio Verne and executed technically complex land works involving deep shafts and a long sloping tunnel. The project also included supply and installation of a permanent Pry‑Cam Grids monitoring system along the land sections. With a total system length of more than 260 km of 380 kV cable and 2,000 MW capacity, the link reinforces the connection between the Sicilian and mainland Italian grids.
