Turnkey 220 kV HVAC submarine and underground cable link between Malta (Magħtab/Qalet Marku) and Ragusa in Sicily, comprising ~100 km subsea cable and ~25 km underground land cable, including a 220 kV substation and terminal station in Malta, designed, manufactured and installed by Nexans.
Enemalta awarded Nexans a €178 million turnkey contract to deliver Malta’s first high‑voltage AC interconnector to Sicily. The scope covered engineering and design of the complete cable system, manufacture of a single‑circuit 220 kV three‑core submarine cable and associated underground cables, and installation, burial and seabed protection of the subsea section between Qalet Marku in Malta and Marina di Ragusa in Sicily. Nexans also manufactured the onshore underground cable sections linking the landfall in Sicily to the Ragusa substation and supplied and built the new 220 kV substation and terminal station in Malta, including compensating equipment plus protection and control systems. The project created a 200 MW, bidirectional Malta–Italy interconnection, significantly reducing Malta’s reliance on local generation and integrating the island with the European grid. Design and construction took place in the early 2010s, with commissioning in 2015.
