IC2 is a ~122km, 225MW, 220kV HVAC interconnector between Maghtab (Malta) and Ragusa (Sicily), including ~99km subsea and ~23km onshore cable. SELT SpA manufactures and installs the 21km Sicily and 1.8km Malta onshore high-voltage cable sections.
SELT SpA was awarded a €34.2 million contract by Interconnect Malta for the onshore cable works on the Malta–Italy Interconnector 2 (IC2). The scope covers manufacture, supply, trenching, installation and restoration of approximately 21km of 220kV high-voltage onshore cable in Sicily, from the Marina di Ragusa landfall to the Ragusa 220kV substation, and 1.8km of cable between the Maghtab terminal and the l-Għallis landfall in Malta. The contract also includes associated fibre-optic cable and accessories. These onshore sections complete the connection between the subsea cable and the respective grid substations, forming a critical part of the ~122km, 225MW HVAC interconnector that will double Malta’s transmission capacity to Sicily. SELT’s role is firmly in the construction phase, delivering both cable manufacture and onshore installation.
