225 MW, ~122 km Malta–Italy Interconnector 2 between Magħtab (Malta) and Ragusa (Sicily), including ~99 km 220 kV submarine cable laid parallel to the existing interconnector.
Nexans was awarded a contract by Interconnect Malta to manufacture and supply the high-voltage subsea cable system for Malta–Italy Interconnector 2 (IC2), the second electrical link between Magħtab in Malta and Ragusa in Sicily. The 225 MW, 220 kV interconnector will run in parallel to the existing IC1 link and includes approximately 99 km of three-core submarine power cable with integrated fibre-optic elements. Under this construction-phase contract, Nexans is producing the fibre-optic elements at its Rognan facility in Norway and the high-voltage subsea cable at its Charleston, South Carolina plant, before delivery for offshore installation along the approved 122 km route. The project is intended to double Malta’s interconnection capacity, improve grid resilience and enable greater integration of renewable energy into the national system.
