Arteche supplied and implemented Red Eléctrica de España’s new multifunctional protection and control system on substations in Mallorca and Menorca associated with the Mallorca–Menorca interconnection. The scope covered manufacture and delivery of digital protection and control equipment (IEDs and related control hardware/software) and its integration into REE’s substation control architecture, replacing the traditional three-device protection scheme with a mirrored dual-protection configuration. Arteche’s system reduces the quantity of field equipment, simplifies wiring, and enables redundant acquisition of measurements and signalling, which in turn facilitates maintenance without taking the line out of service and improves overall reliability of the Balearic grid. The first installations were carried out during the COVID-19 confinement period, requiring careful coordination of permits, travel logistics and commissioning activities while the new Mallorca–Menorca cable was being brought into service.
