Red Eléctrica de España commissioned the new Mallorca–Menorca submarine electricity interconnector on 18 June 2020, bringing the link into operation after completing testing and commissioning protocols. The three-core 132 kV submarine-underground cable, with an 84 million euro investment, connects the Ciutadella substation in Menorca to the Cala Mesquida substation in Majorca via a 41.7 km subsea section and 12.5 km and 742 m underground land sections respectively, completing the electrical interconnection of all Balearic Islands with the Spanish mainland and significantly improving the security, stability and quality of Menorca’s power supply while supporting the region’s energy transition.
