Planning permission for the offshore elements of the London Array project was granted in 2006, authorising development of the offshore wind farm site in the outer Thames Estuary and its associated offshore infrastructure, including offshore substations and export cables that transmit power to shore. This consent enabled construction of the 630 MW array of 175 turbines on the Long Sand and Kentish Knock sandbanks and the related offshore transmission system that was later transferred to the London Array OFTO.
