Red Eléctrica and ECOncrete completed a post-installation environmental inspection of the 132 kV subsea electricity cable between Lanzarote and Fuerteventura, using professional divers to visually assess the condition of the cable protection and surrounding seabed. The case study found that ECOncrete’s bio‑enhancing concrete protection along the cable trench had rapidly integrated into the marine environment, with diverse species of fish, algae, sponges, crustaceans, molluscs and sea urchins colonising the structures less than a year after installation, demonstrating positive biodiversity impacts alongside the operational power link.
On 17 October 2022, Red Eléctrica (Redeia) announced that the new 132 kV inter-island electricity link between the Playa Blanca substation on Lanzarote and the La Oliva substation on Fuerteventura had been successfully completed and placed in service, marking full commercial operation of the Lanzarote–Fuerteventura interconnector. The 14.5 km subsea cable with additional underground land sections, representing a €36 million investment and 120 MVA transmission capacity, now strengthens security and quality of supply on both islands, supports greater renewable energy integration, and reduces dependence on fossil fuels, complementing the existing 66 kV link commissioned in 2005.
On 17 October 2022, Red Eléctrica successfully completed the new 132 kV subsea electricity link between the Playa Blanca substation in Lanzarote and the La Oliva substation in Fuerteventura, comprising a 14.5 km underwater cable at up to 80 metres depth and two underground land sections of 1.8 km on Lanzarote and 645 metres on Fuerteventura. The completed cable significantly strengthens the quality and security of supply on both islands and reduces their dependence on fossil fuels.
On 16 November 2021, Red Eléctrica de España started offshore construction for the new 132 kV electricity interconnection between Lanzarote and Fuerteventura, mobilising the cable‑laying vessel Leonardo Da Vinci to begin laying the 14.5 km submarine cable between the Playa Blanca and La Oliva substations after route surveys and preparation works.
By mid-November 2021, Red Eléctrica had completed geophysical surveys for the new 132 kV interconnector between the Playa Blanca substation on Lanzarote and the La Oliva substation on Fuerteventura, including bathymetric mapping and seabed characterisation along the 14.5 km submarine route to define the cable corridor and minimise environmental impact.
By 16 November 2021, geotechnical investigations for the Lanzarote–Fuerteventura 132 kV subsea interconnector had been carried out along the full route, providing soil and seabed data needed to design the trenching and burial of the power cable between Playa Blanca and La Oliva and to support detailed route preparation prior to cable laying.
On 12 December 2019, Prysmian Group was awarded a turnkey contract worth about €27 million by Red Eléctrica de España to design, supply, install and commission the 132 kV HVAC three-core submarine and land power cable system linking Playa Blanca substation on Lanzarote with La Oliva substation on Fuerteventura, covering roughly 14 km subsea and 2 km onshore. This contract formally confirmed Prysmian as the cable supplier for the Lanzarote–Fuerteventura interconnector, with delivery and commissioning then scheduled for 2021.
