21 Feb 2019Decommissioning Start
On 21 February 2019, Terna began decommissioning the existing 132 kV overhead line between Fusina 2 and Sacca Fisola in the Venetian Lagoon, starting demolition works covering 6.5 km of line and 24 pylons, most of them located in the lagoon area. This dismantling is part of the lagoon grid modernisation in which the new underground/submarine Fusina 2–Sacca Fisola cable link replaces the former overhead connection.

Licence: Development Plan consents for Venice Lagoon 132 kV cables (Decree EL-106)
The Italian Ministry for Economic Development granted the necessary consents for Terna’s Venetian Lagoon 132 kV cable project, including the Fusina 2 – Sacca Fisola underground/submarine power line, via Decree EL-106 on 6 August 2009. These development plan consents authorised construction of the new cable links, which were intended to enhance security and reliability of the grid serving Venice and enable the retirement of existing 132 kV overhead lines in the lagoon.

Terna reports that the 132 kV cable power line between the Fusina 2 primary substation and the Sacca Fisola primary substation in the Venetian Lagoon has entered service, together with the parallel Sacca Serenella–Cavallino cable link. The new infrastructure improves grid security and reliability for Venice and enables the retirement of around 7 km of 132 kV overhead lines in the lagoon, following consents granted by the Ministry for Economic Development in Decree EL-106 of 6 August 2009.

Terna began work on the 132 kV underground power line between Fusina 2 and the Sacca Fisola primary substation, the second stretch of its Venetian Lagoon grid modernisation project, which was planned for completion before the end of 2018 to enable dismantling of 6.5 km of existing overhead line in the lagoon.

As part of wider environmental and infrastructure mitigation measures for the Porto Marghera–Fusina area, authorities planned the undergrounding of the existing high‑voltage overhead power line along the lagoon stretch between Fusina and Sacca Fisola and the creation of a new underground line between Sacca Serenella and Cavallino. This planning measure effectively defined the future Laguna Veneta: Fusina 2 – Sacca Fisola 132 kV cable link as a replacement for the visually intrusive overhead alignment in the Venetian Lagoon.
