Cyclades (Κυκλάδες)
As part of Phase B of the Cyclades Interconnection, which was inaugurated on 13 October 2020 with the energisation of Naxos into the high‑voltage system, the power supply of the Small Cyclades islands Heraklia, Schinoussa and Koufonisia – including the Koufonisi‑Schinoussa submarine link – was reported as being upgraded to improve their electricity supply from the mainland via Paros/Naxos.
On 19 March 2018, IPTO inaugurated Phase A of the Cyclades Interconnection, under which Syros and Paros were linked to the mainland grid by a high‑voltage submarine cable and, via Paros, the islands of Antiparos, Naxos, Koufonissi, Schinoussa, Irakleia, Ios, Sikinos and Folegandros were supplied with electricity from the Mainland Power Transmission System, bringing the Koufonisi–Schinoussa link into service within the interconnected network.
At the beginning of 2018, Phase A of the Cyclades Interconnection became fully operational, meaning the new transmission links via Syros and Paros were in commercial service and supplying downstream islands including Naxos, Koufonissi and Schinoussa with power from the Mainland Power Transmission System, so the Koufonisi–Schinoussa submarine link was operating as part of the fully commissioned Small Cyclades network.
For Phase A of the Cyclades Interconnection, which connected Syros and Paros to the mainland grid and, via Paros, enabled mainland power supply to Naxos, Koufonissi, Schinoussa and other islands, IPTO secured a financing package including €102 million of European Union and NSRF grants within a total project budget of €247 million, complemented by a loan from the European Investment Bank, with the non‑grant portion entering the operator’s regulated asset base.
