ABB (through its predecessor ASEA) supplied the original Konti‑Skan 1 high-voltage direct current (HVDC) transmission scheme commissioned in 1965 between Vester Hassing in Denmark and Stenkullen in Sweden. As the main technology provider, ABB designed, manufactured and installed the mercury‑arc valve converter stations and associated HVDC equipment at both terminals, enabling 250 MW power transfer at 250 kV DC and creating the first interconnection between Sweden and western Denmark. The scope covered complete converter station engineering together with supply of valves, transformers, reactors, switchgear and control/protection systems, integrated with the overhead line and submarine cable system. Konti‑Skan 1 became one of ABB’s reference projects in the 1960s and later served as a platform for subsequent thyristor-based upgrades and technology trials on the link.
