The KONTEK 400‑kV cross‑border interconnector between Germany and Denmark completed its underground cable replacement and returned to service in mid‑2023. After 25 years of operation, the existing cables had reached the end of their operability. Energinet first replaced the approximately 150 km onshore and submarine cable section under its responsibility, while 50Hertz carried out the second stage, replacing around 15 km of underground onshore cable in Mecklenburg‑Western Pomerania along a largely parallel route to the existing line. Following commissioning of this new route and conclusion of the associated work activities, 50Hertz confirms that KONTEK has been operational again since mid‑2023, indicating that the replacement cable system has entered commercial operation.
