For the KONTEK high-voltage direct current (HVDC) cable between Zealand in Denmark and Rostock in Germany, an Environmental Impact Assessment (Umweltverträglichkeitsprüfung) was carried out and submitted to the competent authority. The assessment predicted strong but temporally limited impacts on marine fauna and parts of the flora due to noise, dredging, turbidity and disposal of material during cable installation, with effects expected to be confined to the construction period and subsequent regeneration time. The procedure fell under the responsibility of the Staatliches Amt für Umwelt und Natur Rostock (StAUN), which acted as the approving authority for the project.
