In 2015, transmission system operators 50Hertz and Energinet.dk, through ENTSO-E’s Baltic Sea Regional Investment Plan, confirmed Kontek‑3 as the third HVDC interconnector between Denmark‑East and Germany and decided its final technical capacity at 600 MW. The project was nominated for the TYNDP‑2016 assessment phase, with a preliminary configuration comprising one 600 MW VSC converter station in Denmark, one 600 MW VSC converter station in Germany, an 85 km 600 MW DC submarine cable, and an 85 km 600 MW DC onshore cable, and an indicative cost of about EUR 550 million. The project is characterised as a future interconnector aimed at market integration and additional renewable energy integration, with an expected commissioning beyond 2030.
