GREP (Global Renewable Energy Partners; subsequently Vattenfall via the Elsam acquisition route) submitted the Section 36 application under the Electricity Act 1989 to the Department of Trade and Industry for the 30-turbine, 90 MW Kentish Flats offshore wind farm in the outer Thames Estuary, approximately 8.5 km north of Herne Bay, Kent. The Kentish Flats Environmental Statement supporting the Section 36 application was dated August 2002. Supporting technical work referenced in the ES included HR Wallingford Report EX4510 (April 2002) on coastal processes and HR Wallingford Report EX4725 (March 2003) on metocean conditions. The project was a UK Round 1 offshore wind farm following The Crown Estate lease award in April 2001. Section 36 consent was subsequently granted, construction commenced in 2004 and the wind farm was commissioned in September 2005. A separate Kentish Flats Extension was later consented through the Development Consent Order (DCO) regime in 2013.
