Kentish Flats

Kentish Flats is an operational 90 MW offshore wind farm located off the coast of Kent, England, developed and operated by Vattenfall. Commissioned in 2005, the project was an early commercial-scale fixed-foundation offshore wind scheme in the UK, built using monopile foundations and 30 Vestas V90-3 MW turbines. The farm has been part of Vattenfall’s local Kent portfolio and helped establish operational experience and local supply‑chain capacity ahead of later, larger UK projects. In 2013 consent was granted for a nearby extension and a 49.5 MW add-on was constructed and brought online in 2015 as a separate phase, keeping the original 90 MW Kentish Flats plant distinct from the extension. Commercial arrangements include long‑standing offtake activity (reported PPA with SmartestEnergy), and routine operations and maintenance arrangements overseen by Vattenfall and contracted service providers. Over its operating life the project has delivered consistent renewable generation to the UK grid and served as an early demonstration of monopile-mounted turbines in relatively shallow waters. The site remains part of Vattenfall’s Kent operational cluster alongside Thanet and the later extension, and is listed in Crown Estate records as an operational offshore wind farm owned/operated by Vattenfall.
