The Kefalonia–Zakynthos project is an upgrade of the existing 150 kV HVAC subsea electrical interconnection between the Ionian islands of Kefalonia and Zakynthos. The works form one leg of a wider programme to modernise the 150 kV interconnections serving the Ionian Islands; the Kefalonia–Zakynth...

Onshore construction for the upgrade of the Kefalonia–Zakynthos interconnector moved into active phase in early 2026, with initial works taking place at Mounda beach on Kefalonia, where the new 150 kV high-voltage submarine cable will make landfall. The project, led by ADMIE, involves installing new submarine and underground cables and integrating optical fibres over a 20.4 km route between Kefalonia and Zakynthos (plus the parallel Lefkada–Kefalonia link), following earlier preparatory and underwater survey works carried out by the DP‑2 vessel Astrea using ROV mapping of the existing PPC cable to identify a safe route and landfall points.
The turnkey project awarded by IPTO to Hellenic Cables/Fulgor for upgrading the 150 kV submarine cable interconnections between Kefalonia–Zakynthos and Lefkada–Kefalonia, including approximately 38 km of underground and submarine cables (with 20.4 km for the Kefalonia–Zakynthos leg), is planned to be completed in 2026, implying completion of the new cable installation and associated works on this interconnector segment by that year.

Energy and marine consultancy ABL was selected as marine warranty survey services provider to support Hellenic Cables’ installation of the upgraded 150 kV submarine interconnectors between Kefalonia and Zakynthos and between Lefkada and Kefalonia, a total cable length of about 38 km, with the project aimed at enhancing the Ionian islands’ energy security and completion expected in 2026.
IPTO (ADMIE) completed the tender for upgrading the Kefalonia–Zakynthos and Lefkada–Kefalonia electrical interconnections and, at the end of October 2024, signed a turnkey contract with Hellenic Cables/Fulgor for the design, supply and installation of about 38 km of 150 kV XLPE submarine and underground cables, fully replacing the aging links between the Ionian islands at a project cost of nearly EUR 100 million and with construction expected to last around 12 months from contract signing.
