Terna Energy’s 330 MW Kafireas wind project in Evia, comprising 17 wind farms and 101 turbines and connected to the mainland Interconnection System via a 69.1 km, 150 kV submarine cable to the Lavrion GIS substation in Attica, entered operational service in December 2023. This marks the start of commercial power transmission from the Kafireas complex through the new subsea link and associated substations on Evia to the Greek mainland grid.
As part of the Kafireas project’s grid connection, three new 150 kV substations were constructed on Evia at Omalies, Evangelismos and Stavros to connect the Kafireas wind farm cluster to the mainland interconnection system via the 69.1 km submarine cable to the Lavrion GIS substation in Attica.
Asso.subsea announced the successful completion of the export submarine cable installation and protection for the Kafireas II wind farm interconnection between the southernmost part of Evia island and mainland Greece. Working as an EPCI contractor in joint venture with Hellenic Cables for TERNA Energy, the company completed loading, laying and protecting more than 70 km of 150 kV submarine cable system that will connect the Kafireas complex to Greece’s mainland grid.
By mid‑February 2023, Asso.subsea and Hellenic Cables had carried out and completed geotechnical surveys for the Kafireas II interconnection, undertaking soil and route investigations along more than 70 km of 150 kV three‑core submarine cable that links Terna Energy’s Kafireas wind farm cluster in southern Evia to the mainland grid at IPTO’s 150 kV Lavrion substation.
ADMIE (IPTO) completed the installation of a static VAR compensator (SVC) system at the Platanistos substation to provide voltage regulation for the interconnection network serving the Kafireas wind farm complex, enhancing grid stability for the submarine link between Evia and mainland Greece.
On 21 April 2021, Terna Energy selected a joint venture of Hellenic Cables and Asso.subsea to provide the 150 kV submarine cable system for the Kafireas interconnection, linking the 330 MW Kafireas II wind farm complex in southern Evia to Greece’s mainland grid at IPTO’s 150 kV Lavrion substation in Attica. The turnkey contract, awarded following an international tender, covers the design, manufacturing, supply and installation of approximately 70 km of three‑core composite submarine cable and about 11 km of 150 kV underground onshore cable, including all accessories, joints, terminations and seabed protection works, with implementation (including offshore installation and protection) then expected to be completed by June 2022.
