First Johan Sverdrup power-from-shore link: ±80 kV HVDC Light system with two parallel submarine cables, about 200 km route, between Haugsneset converter station and the Johan Sverdrup field centre.
NKT supplied the first high-voltage power-from-shore cable system for the Johan Sverdrup development. Under a turnkey scope, NKT engineered, manufactured and installed an approximately 200 km, ±80 kV HVDC Light submarine cable pair between the onshore converter station at Haugsneset, near Kårstø on the Norwegian west coast, and the Johan Sverdrup field centre in the North Sea. The cables were produced at NKT’s Karlskrona factory and installed in 2018 using the cable-laying vessel NKT Victoria, with bundled fibre-optic cable for communications and control. This DC link provides 100 MW of power-from-shore capacity for Johan Sverdrup Phase 1, enabling full electrification of the first four platforms and substantially reducing CO2 emissions compared with offshore gas-turbine generation.
