ABB was awarded a USD 155 million contract by Statoil in March 2015 to provide the HVDC power-from-shore system for the first phase of Johan Sverdrup electrification. The scope covered design, engineering, supply and commissioning of two ±80 kV, 100 MW HVDC Light converter stations – one onshore at Haugsneset near the Kårstø plant and one on the Johan Sverdrup offshore field centre. ABB’s responsibilities included the onshore and offshore converter equipment, associated control and protection systems, and installation, supervision and site services, enabling efficient 200 km transmission of power from the Norwegian grid to the field and replacing local gas-turbine generation.
