In 2010, the operators of the Edvard Grieg, Ivar Aasen and Gina Krog fields initiated a joint study to evaluate a common power-from-shore solution for the Utsira High area. The study examined using high-voltage direct current (HVDC) transmission from the Norwegian onshore grid and concluded that, while technically feasible, the concept was considered too costly at that time. This early feasibility work laid groundwork for the later Johan Sverdrup-based electrification scheme.
