Nexans supplied one of the two 500 kV HVDC cables for the MONITA interconnector, comprising 423 km of submarine cable and 22 km of onshore cable between Cepagatti (Pescara) and Kotor (near Budva), including turnkey installation, trenching and testing.
Nexans was awarded by Terna in 2012 one of two main lots for the Italy–Montenegro HVDC Monita interconnector, covering the turnkey supply, installation and testing of one 500 kV mass‑impregnated HVDC cable system between Cepagatti/Villanova in Italy and the Kotor/Lastva area in Montenegro. The contract, valued at about EUR 340 million, included engineering, manufacture and laying of approximately 423 km of aluminium‑conductor submarine cable and 22 km of copper‑conductor land cable, along with accessories and terminations. Nexans used its cable‑lay vessel Nexans Skagerrak to install the subsea sections in three campaigns, with Capjet trenching for seabed protection, and undertook jointing and on‑site works for the land sections in both countries. The entire cable system was successfully tested at 700 kV as part of pre‑commissioning, marking Nexans’ largest submarine project to date and delivering one pole of the Italy–Montenegro interconnector during the construction phase.
