In January 1988 SWEB approved the placing of contracts for the manufacture and installation of a 33kV submarine cable to link the Isles of Scilly with the Board's mainland network in Cornwall. The manufacturers were Pirelli General... The cable for one of the longest submarine links in the UK, some 55km in length and weighing 1,300 tons, was to link Whitesands Bay on the Lands End peninsula to St Mary's on the Isles of Scilly.
Pirelli General manufactured the 33 kV submarine power cable that links the Isles of Scilly to the mainland electricity network in Cornwall. Under contracts approved by the South Western Electricity Board (SWEB) in January 1988, Pirelli General produced a three‑core, copper, EPR‑insulated, steel‑wire‑armoured cable, approximately 55 km in length and weighing about 1,300 tonnes. This single HVAC island‑link cable runs from Whitesands Bay on the Land’s End peninsula to Porthcressa Bay on St Mary’s, forming one of the UK’s longest distribution‑voltage submarine links and enabling bulk power import to replace local diesel generation on the islands.
