Replacement of a single 132 kV Solent subsea electricity cable between Hampshire and Thorness Bay on the Isle of Wight, including landfall sections and subsea burial.
A specialist joint venture between VolkerInfra and VSMC delivered a £14 million project to replace one of three 132 kV subsea electricity cables under the Solent supplying the Isle of Wight. Awarded by Scottish and Southern Energy, the contract involved installing a single bespoke HVAC cable between the Hampshire coast and Thorness Bay, including a 930 m horizontal directional drill from shore into the Solent seabed and subsea installation and burial of over 5.6 km of cable. The scope also encompassed preparations for the final phase to connect the new circuit into the transmission networks on the Isle of Wight and in Hampshire, followed by testing and commissioning, marking the first new subsea electrical installation under the Solent in 40 years.
