IFA2 is a 1,000 MW ±320 kV VSC-HVDC symmetric monopole interconnector between Tourbe (France) and Chilling (UK), with about 200 km subsea and 25 km onshore route length, implemented as two parallel DC cables.
Prysmian Group was awarded an EPC contract by IFA2 SAS, the joint venture between National Grid IFA2 Ltd and RTE, for the turnkey design, manufacture and installation of the IFA2 power cable systems linking Tourbe in northern France to Chilling in Hampshire, UK. The scope covers the ±320 kV HVDC interconnector cables, comprising around 25 km of underground route in France and about 200 km of subsea route across the English Channel, as well as associated onshore sections in the UK. Prysmian also supplies a separate HVAC link connecting the Daedalus converter station to the Chilling 400 kV substation, including both subsea and land sections. Subsea HVDC cables are manufactured at Pikkala, Finland, and land cables at Gron, France, with installation performed using Prysmian’s Cable Enterprise and Ulisse vessels and local resources in France and the UK. The contract, valued at about €350 million, was signed in April 2017 and covered delivery and commissioning for a planned 2020 energisation.
