IFA (the joint venture of RTE and National Grid) commenced onshore construction works in 1985 to build the landside elements of the 2,000 MW IFA1 interconnector. Works included civil construction of the Sellindge (GB) and Les Mandarins (FR) converter station sites and installation of the underground onshore cable sections that link the coastal landfalls to the converter stations. These onshore works formed an integral part of the project delivery ahead of system commissioning in 1986.
